    Robert Maurer, PhD, author of the international best-seller One Small Step Can Change Your Life, is a clinical psychologist and faculty member at UCLA and the University of Washington School of Medicine. Founder of Science of Excellence, he has served as a consultant to Walt Disney Studios, the Four Seasons Hotels, Costco, the U.S. Navy and Air Force, and Habitat for Humanity.     Michelle Gifford, MA, is a clinical speech pathologist and consultant-educator for families and teams, developing programs of excellence on behalf of children with special needs.     A must have book if you truly want to master fear.

    Far too many of us go through life afraid to move forward and become locked in a pattern of fear that blocks us from achieving our goals and dreams. For those of us who are willing to break that paralytic, emotional pattern, Dr. Maurer presents a “more than how to book” that delineates a way to move into the freedom of who you truly are as a powerful, and creative individual. He systematically, and cogently, explains the process of fear and how to move through it in ways that are simple, clear, and that can lay the groundwork for a confident and meaningful life. I highly recommend this book.

    good book on how to harness Fear to achieve success — its been explained first as to what unnatural ways we(most of us) are right now using to deal with fear — and then a solution has been proposed which is more in tune with our natural instincts

    its been elaborated on how this solution can be used effectively at the work place , in relationships

    overall I recommend this book to anyone who would like to deal with fear in a natural/proven way.

    An outstanding resource

    I have been a follower of Dr. Maurer’s work for many years now. After reading his first book (One Small Step Can Change Your Life), I followed up with him to interview him for a book that I was writing at the time (The Law of Attraction in Action) and subsequently have shared the podium with him at several speaking events and have hosted him as a speaker at several events for my clients and for my own business. By way of full disclosure, Dr. Maurer met his co-author, Michelle Gifford, through one of my events, as well. I have long been fans of their work and this new book only increases my regard for their expertise and treatment of this particular topic.

    I have eagerly awaited this book due to the importance of this particular topic and because Dr. Maurer’s work is so important to the fields of Positive Psychology and Peak Performance. Mastering Fear proposes that stress doesn’t actually exist–that stress is simply a term we use for our (often unhealthy) response to the very natural phenomenon of fear in our lives. The book makes the case, through great research, storytelling, examples, and exercises, that we can create a much healthier relationship with fear, and thereby favorably and measurably impact our work, relationships, health, and other areas of our life. By identifying the fear triggering an emotional response and engaging in healthier, more productive ways of dealing with that fear (e.g., the simple but often overlooked act of reaching out for support), we can not only create better outcomes in all of those areas of our lives (and more), but also have a better experience emotionally and in practical ways as we navigate the many unexpected things that occur in our lives.

    I was struck by the research basis for the book, which clearly points to how resilience can be cultivated and how we can take simple but powerful steps to make a positive difference in our own lives, and in the life experiences of our partners, children, teams, and communities. I was particularly interested in his discussion of “the drama triangle,” which gives great insight into what happens during interpersonal conflict and the options we have for addressing some of the root causes of that conflict that are either sparked by or fueled by fear. I am on my second reading of this book and have already identified additional points that are making a difference in my personal life and in my professional life as an author and speaker on the topics of Positive Psychology.

    I cannot recommend this book (and Dr. Maurer’s previous two books) highly enough. It will be a trusted resource in my library for many years to come.
