Bernie Sanders Says He Shares This Belief With The Cheneys Despite 'Very Different' Views

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) gave props to ex-Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and former Vice President Dick Cheney on Sunday for their endorsements of Kamala Harris’ campaign.

“Cheney and I agree on nothing, no issues,” said the progressive senator in an appearance on “Meet the Press.”

“But what we do believe in is that the United States should retain its democratic foundations.”

The Cheneys joined a list of Republicans who have publicly announced that they won’t support Donald Trump’s bid to return to the White House.

The two warned ofthe dangers should Trump be elected back into the Oval Office, with the former vice president declaring that that GOP nominee “can never be trusted with power again.”

Liz Cheney, meanwhile, has since described Trump as representing a “unrecoverable catastrophe” and said the choice for president “is not a close one.”

“Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker noted that the former congresswoman — a lifelong Republican like her father — voted with Trump more than 90% of the time and was “quite critical” when President Joe Biden picked Harris as his running mate in 2020.

“Would you welcome seeing Liz Cheney out on the campaign trail?” Welker asked Sanders.

“Well, Kristen, what I think Dick and Liz Cheney are saying is that in this existential moment in American history, it’s not just issues,” he replied.

He later added that aside from the Cheneys, he thinks there’s a “significant number” of Republicans who acknowledge they disagree with Harris on some issues.

“But [they] cannot support somebody whose a pathological liar, somebody who fomented an insurrection to overthrow the election,” he said.

“So, I applaud the Cheneys for their courage in defending democracy. Obviously, of all the issues, we have very different points of view.”
