Man arrested as Oshkosh police say they halted human trafficking at local hotel

OSHKOSH – Authorities halted human trafficking activities at a local hotel on Friday, according to the Oshkosh Police Department.

Police arrested a 32-year-old Texas man they say was forcing a female to participate in activities against her will for several months, “during which she lived in fear of the suspect,” according to a media release.

The man was detained after being seen leaving the hotel room of a female that an investigation by an Oshkosh police detective had determined was involved in human trafficking activities. An undercover officer met with the female at the hotel, just after the man left the room.

The man initially resisted officers’ efforts to detain him, according to police, who say the man has an extensive criminal history.

The man possessed a stolen firearm and “a substantial quantity” of illegal drugs, police say, while a search of the hotel room uncovered a second firearm and additional illegal drugs.

Police say the man and female traveled across multiple states, before ending up in Oshkosh. They say the man has connections to Texas and Colorado, but no immediate ties to the Oshkosh community or Wisconsin.

The man faces multiple felony charges, including human trafficking, felon in possession of a firearm, and various counts of possession with intent to deliver controlled substances like methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine. He is currently being held at the Winnebago County Jail.

Oshkosh police say they are working to reunite the female with her family, with local advocacy groups aiming to ensure she has the support needed to recover.
