Police searching for driver in accident that left a passenger dead


WOODBRIDGE – Police are searching for the driver of a car involved in a single vehicle accident on Friday that left a passenger dead, authorities said.

It is believed the driver fled the scene.

Authorities are continuing to investigate a single car crash that killed Mario Ortiz Bonilla, 47, of North Plainfield man, said Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Woodbridge Police Department Director Robert Hubner.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, at 9:05 a.m. on Friday, police responded to the area of Route 9 and Green Street in the township following the report of an accident. At the scene, authorities found a 2017 Kia Sportage which was occupied only by Bonilla, the front passenger.

Bonilla had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

An investigation led by Detective Jeffery Horvath of the Woodbridge Police Department and Detective Matthew Colonna of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that the driver of the Kia Sportage fled the scene.
